Today, I would like to introduce "The goodness of the analog board that I noticed using the smart watch Nokia 'Steel HR'" released on February 27, 2018 at the ASCII club.

Ayaka Ikezawa, Nokia's smartwatch ambassador and friend, introduced me to the "Steel HR". I will report my impressions after using it for about 3 weeks.

It is not good to wear like this picture (see below)

There are various types of smart watches, such as those specialized for fitness such as Garmin, those that display notifications etc. in cooperation with smartphones such as Fossil, and those specialized for outdoor activities such as Casio.

Steel HR is characterized by the fashionability of analog boards and the long battery life of up to 25 days. It can track heart rate, steps, activity, sleep, etc., and can be said to be a fitness-oriented smartwatch.

From Nokia official website (price and information as of January 2018)

Equipped with a battery that lasts 25 days and an organic EL / heart rate sensor

Nokia sells three types of smart watches. Among them, Steel HR is the top model.

Steel HR was originally released by Withings, a French company that has worked on health care products for many years. In Japan, it was released on January 20, 2017 as "Withings Steel HR".

Withings was acquired by Nokia in May 2016, and "Withings Steel HR" was relaunched as "Nokia Steel HR" on December 15, 2017 after undergoing a major renewal.

The difference between "Steel" and Steel HR is the presence or absence of an organic EL display and heart rate sensor, and the battery.

Steel uses a commercially available button battery and does not need to be charged. The battery lasts up to 8 months, and you replace it when the battery runs out. It also doesn't have a display and can't show notifications. It doesn't have a heart rate sensor either, so you'll have to put your finger on your phone's camera to measure your heart rate.

Continuous heart rate sensing is essential to know exercise intensity. Besides displaying notifications, the display is useful for showing the status of the watch. If you know when the watch is charging or when it is communicating with your smartphone, you can determine if the watch is working properly.

Steel HR seems to have been a long-awaited watch for conventional users in that it has a heart rate sensor and display. However, in exchange for the new function, the trouble of charging occurs.

Still, the battery life of up to 25 days is very long compared to other products with similar functions.

"UP24 by Jawbone" used a few years ago

A few years ago, the author used the 2014 domestically released “UP24 by Jawbone” as an activity meter. The battery life was about 7 days, which was longer than a general smartwatch (it's an activity meter, so it can't be compared in the first place), but even so, charging became annoying and I gradually stopped using it.

I have high hopes that the Steel HR will free me from the hassle of charging.

There are two types of case sizes: 36mm and 40mm. The 36mm is available in two colors, black and white, and the price is 25,250 yen including tax. The 40mm is available in one color, black, and the price is 27,950 yen including tax. The smartphone app "Health Mate" that automatically synchronizes with the watch via Bluetooth is compatible with Android / iOS, and data can be synchronized with Apple's health care app.
