NHK "Giken Release 2021 Online" is full of interesting research!I deeply digged the four themes I noticed (after): Reiji Asakura's good research institute report 53

The "Giken Release 2021 Online", which is being held until June 30 (Wednesday), introduces many research presentations for audio visual fans.In the previous series, we introduced two techniques that Mr. Asakura focused on.This time, which is the second part, we will deliver two more themes. One is a immersive VR display using a flexible organic EL panel, and the other is quantum dot technology used as a light emitting element. Both are important studies that may change the display scene of the near future.Introducing the details.(Editorial department)

Future immersive VR display

This is an application example using a flexible organic EL panel that has been attracting attention every time in the release.Combining a flexible display that surrounds the viewer about 180 degrees in front of the viewer, and a chair that vibrates to the sound and the sound, we were able to experience a surprisingly realistic immersive feeling.

The 30 -inch flexible organic EL panel jointly developed with Sharp has been seen many times, but this usage is a scale from the eyes.He was excited about the feeling of sitting in a tram driver's driver running in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.(Asakura)

This exhibition was the most interesting online video of Asakura Giken released 2021.Can you really impress so much?I thought. The organic EL panel used is 30 inches.

Okada This is a flexible organic EL panel jointly developed with Sharp. The organic EL layer is steamed into a film with special ingenuity. The panel displayed this time displays the signal as it is without passing a video processing circuit like a home TV.

Asakura: This is a 30 -inch type, but didn't you want to make it bigger?

When it comes to Okada's big screen panel, the hurdles will rise a little, and unevenness will be more likely to occur. This time, I use 30 types because of that meaning.

Asakura: This is an exhibition on the VR display this time, but if you actually commercialize it, will the turned TV be the main application?

Okada: First of all, I think so.Since the display surface can be bent freely, various possibilities will be expanded as a display. This time, we exhibited immersive displays that make use of the 4K high image quality and the fact that it can be bent.

Asakura Real is bent more than expected by watching online videos.

Okada is designed to cover about 180 degrees. If you approach the position of both ends of the display, you can feel quite immersive.

Asakura This is surprising. It is a landscape from the driver's driver's seat, but the realism is amazing and scary.I thought it was intentional when I saw the woman surprised in the video, but it was even more amazing when I experienced it.

If you cover all the visuals with images, you can really immers them. Not only the cityscape is real, but also the face of a passerby can be seen firmly, so it seems as if you are in the place. If you enclose it not only in front, but also on the side and later, you can have a real VR experience.

Did this video shoot with three 4K cameras?

Okada: I'm using the program broadcast on NHK's 8K broadcast "BS8K".Originally, the content was taken with a wide -angle lens, and in that sense it was compatible with immersive displays.

Asakura If it is commercialized, it would be nice to be able to adjust the panel curve freely.I usually enjoy it as a flat TV, and if I want to enjoy it personally, curve the screen to pursue immersive feeling. It will be popular as a TV that can be used in various ways.

Okada: As you said, this panel can be bent as you like.In the first place, it is not necessary to see all the content in the immersive state, so if you want to watch the news, you can use it as a plane, and if you enjoy a movie or game, you can use it on a curved surface.

Asakura What was the most difficult point in this exhibition?

I had to control the three Okada 4K panels so that the video was not disturbed, so I had a hard time adjusting the drive system. In the past exhibition, even one 4K panel was required, but this time, one PC can be displayed on one PC.

I experienced Asakura reality and found the value of this VR display.I'm glad I came today (laughs). If you have a real exhibition opportunity, I would like many people to experience it.

High -color purity quantum dot emitting element

Quantum dots (QD) are currently being used as color conversion filters for LCD TVs.Unlike this, Giken's research is an attempt to flowing current to QD and emitting RGB directly.Currently, the popular white organic EL can make a large screen, but it requires a color filter, and there is an issue in color reproduction. However, the RGB -painted organic EL is difficult to make a large screen. What began to be noticed there was QD emission. If the core size is large, the medium -sized is green, and when it becomes small, it emits blue. The printing process is also possible, and the winding large screen is not a dream.(Asakura)

Asakura quantum dot is used as a color filter, but I have never seen an example used as a light emitting element. Is this because it is difficult to use for light emission?

Iwasaki quantum dot emission is still in the research stage.Quantum dots using cadmium are made of good characteristics, and in some cases used for displays. But we think cadmium -free is desirable, so we are conducting research in that direction.

Asakura's luminous principle, is it okay to add electricity to quantum dots to glow on RGB?

Iwasaki Yes, it glows on the same principle as organic EL.As an image, I think that the light -emitting material has been changed from an organic EL to a quantum dot.

As a general characteristic of quantum dots, the color of light emission changes depending on the size of the quantum dot core.Red is large particles, and green is used as small particles. In addition, since the color changes even with the elements to be configured, this time, the blue is not reduced the particle size, but by changing the type of elements.

You choose the best quantum dots in the two directions of Asakura size and material. What is the color reproduction range at the moment?

Iwasaki: In this exhibition sample, Bt.709 was cleared and 80 % of BT.2020 was achieved.Without using a color filter, the material itself can be realized in the material itself, so I think that a very wide range of colors can be reproduced.

Asakura That's fine.Where is quantum dot light emissions better than organic EL?

Iwasaki quantum dots can set light emission wavelengths by changing the size of the core, so it may have ideal colors and high pure light emission. In addition, quantum dots can be ink, so the display panel can be manufactured by printing. In that case, a large screen is also possible.

Does Asakura ink dissolve in some solvent?

Since it is distributed to Iwasaki organic solvent, it can be painted and filtered.

Asakura That's great.RGB panels on a large screen are difficult to create, but if the printing method is possible, that will be solved. When are you aiming for the practical use of this technology?

Iwasaki: I haven't seen it specifically yet.We are conducting research to increase light emission efficiency and color purity.Of course, I want the panel manufacturer to try the actual production.I hope it can be practical in the 2020s ...

Asakura: The future theme is brightness and color purity, but is it going to be searched from the ingredients for that?

Iwasaki: Currently, the material that has a good kadmium -free and has a good light emission characteristics of red and green is the inzium, so I use it.For blue, we use seren -based zinc materials.I think this is the best we have worked on.

It is the ideal of the display that Asakura's self -emitting light has a high color purity, so please do your best to become a technology from NHK Giken.

NHK is holding the "Giken Open 2021 Online" until June 30 (Wednesday)."Kenken Open" is an event with many fans as a place for the latest technology announcement held every year at the NHK Broadcasting Technology Research Institute in Kinuta, Tokyo. This year, due to the catastrophe, it was announced only online, not the actual exhibition and events. There are many interesting things for audio visual fans, and even online release is worthwhile. However, online announcements are hard to ask questions about what they care about. This time, "What is the person in charge ...
