Perfect for those who want to experience the latest technology.
Huawei's latest model "Mate 20/20 Pro" continues to grow as a world-class smartphone maker. Even before the release, the leak information alone was a hot topic, "This child ... a child who can .... !!", but Gizmodo reporter Sam Rutherford said, "Mate 20 Pro is tightly packed" and a hands-on experience. He talks and seems to be quite numb. Below, please reporter Sam Rutherford.
Earlier this year, Huawei overtook Apple to become the second largest smartphone maker in the world. What's more, Huawei's most popular model, the P20 Pro, is a feat because it's growing so much that it's not officially sold in the United States. Given the current global business situation, Huawei's next flagship release is likely to be missed by the United States. As a consumer, the situation where this flagship is difficult to obtain in the United States is quite sad. That's because Huawei is pretty serious about the two new Mate 20 models.
This flagship release is now available in two models: the standard version of the Mate 20 and the higher version of the Mate 20 Pro. Just by reading the performance, you can see that it covers the trends of major smartphones. The Mate 20 has a 6.5-inch LCD display (resolution FHD + / 2,244 x 1,080) with a small notch (though Huawei calls it a "drop cutout"), which has 24 megapixels. It has a front camera.
The Mate 20 Pro, on the other hand, also houses a dot projector for 3D scanning (similar to Apple's Face ID) in a horizontal notch. The Mate 20 Pro has a 6.39-inch OLED display (resolution: QHD + / 3,120 x 1,440) and a fingerprint reader with a built-in screen.
That's right, the Mate 20 Pro is the first device made for the mass to have the new features so far. It is a sign of the beginning of a new era that many manufacturers have tried as a concept or a limited model, but it will be delivered to general consumers in large quantities in this way. But that's not all. On the back, both the Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro have a square camera module that houses three Leica cameras.
The Mate 20 Pro's camera has a 40-megapixel standard camera, a 20-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera, and an 8-megapixel telephoto camera. The telephoto camera offers 3x zoom and better reach than the iPhone XS and Galaxy Note 9 zoom lenses. The Mate 20 is a standard camera with 16 million pixels, a super wide-angle camera with 12 million pixels, and a telephoto camera with 80,000 pixels (2x zoom).
The excitement of the contents does not stop. The Mate 20 is the first Huawei smartphone to feature their new processor, the Kirin 980. The processor is said to have seen a 20% performance improvement and a 40% energy efficiency improvement. And we have two NPUs (Neural Processing Units) to give more momentum to the flow of AI / machine learning.
Thanks to NPU, a new camera function using AI has also been added, such as predictive autofocus that AI predicts the movement of the target of the camera, and selection that automatically changes only the background to black and white in real time while keeping the color of the person. A color mode has been installed. I've been using the device for a short time, but both features worked as they advertised. The demo room was crowded and the lighting wasn't perfect, but I'm impressed that it worked. Still, it's still not possible to determine how practical this feature is, or whether Huawei has created it as a solidly completed feature.
Let's take a look at the specs. The Mate 20 Pro is equipped with a huge battery of 4,200mAh and has improved battery performance. It has 6GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, a microSD card slot, and a 40W fast charging system. Considering that most androids have a fast charge of 18W, it's more than doubled. You can even use the wireless charging feature to charge another device from your Mate 20 in the opposite direction.
The Mate 20 is capable of wireless screen mirroring to nearby TVs and monitors with Miracast and IR Blaster. This is rare these days. Unfortunately, only the standard version of the Mate 20 has a headphone jack, and the Mate 20 Pro doesn't.
I was interested in the Mate 20 design. I used to have the impression that it imitated the design of the iPhone, but this time it seems to be influenced by Samsung's design. Except for the notch, the Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro look and feel very similar to the Galaxy S9.
The back is smooth but has a wave-like feel like a fine vinyl record. The variations are rich in colors and full of flair. Includes emerald green, midnight blue, black, pink gold and more, with pale gradients.
The Mate 20 Pro is the latest device that is packed with all the technologies that Huawei has. It's also interesting because it's the exact opposite of Google's approach to the Pixel 3. In Pixel 3, Google focused on device software and avoided spec competition in many ways.
The Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro will be available at some online retailers in the United States, but appear to be an unlocked standard international version. Therefore, it will not be compatible with CDMA carriers such as Verizon and Sprint. Compatibility with 4G LTE features such as carrier aggregation in GSM networks is not yet known. Even if you get the Mate 20 in the US, your wireless speed may be slower than other devices despite having a CAT 21 Gigabit modem.
The Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro will be available later this year, but no official pricing or release date has been announced. Guessing from the Mate 10 and P20, the price will never be cheap.
PS: The official prices in Europe are as follows. The Mate 20's 4GB / 128GB model costs 800 euros (about 104,000 yen), and the Mate 20 Pro's 6GB / 128GB model costs 1050 euros (about 136,500 yen). Huawei has announced it before, but it seems that a Porsche Design version with a leather back, 8GB of RAM, 256GB storage will be released for 1700 euros (about 220,000 yen). It easily exceeds 200,000 yen. Hmm ...
